I met quite a few fellow builder-inventors while I was marketing the CordSnake. I realized that many, if not most of us were in the same boat. Inventing was fun; marketing however was difficult. There were so many unexpected roadblocks and problems. I got the idea to build a web site for builders with inventions. This was to be a a place for builder-inventors to showcase their products, make connections and generate sales. My webmaster built the new web site. You can check it out here: www.BuildersInventions.org
The webmaster did a great job, but it cost more than I had anticipated. I’m currently rebuilding the site and will be adding many more inventors with their cool inventions. If you’re interested in my invention adventure you can head over there and sign up to the opt-in email list. I’ll let you know when that goes live again.
The main point that I want to make is that I had no real clue as to what I was getting myself into. I was flying by the seat of my pants. How do I promote the web site? Use Search Engine Optimization (SEO), was the answer. Well, what the heck is SEO? I started to check that out and quickly began to feel like a sheep in the shearing house. I was quoted prices from the thousands to the ten thousands for SEO services. My head started spinning from all the web marketing stuff. Then I started to notice all the hype and scam online. Like the beginner I was, I even fell for some of it. So many people promoting the latest, greatest, easiest way to make a mint online. Gurus (?) who promised to boost sales conversions, to develop successful Google Adword campaigns, to create affiliate marketing links, to optimize SEO and get on the first page of Google, etc etc. It was getting to be a bit much. Plus I was running out of money. My internet adventure was starting to look like a giant mistake. It was supposed to be fun, like the inventing part.
So for a while I just shut down everything in order to figure it out. I realized that I would have to study Internet marketing if I was vever going to be successful. Now let me just say that this study did not come easy to me. At first it was like learning the Universal Building Code, which builders are supposed to know. I’m a really good builder, but that stuff always put me to sleep zzzzzz. Bureaucratic rules and regulations do that to me.
So, after a short time-out I got into studying online business in order to actually create a successful business. I started with a really good overview course called ‘Tactical Profit’.
